About Retaining Wall Construction
Common questions and tips from our work with Brooklyn customers.
Can my leaning wall be repaired or does it need replacing?
It depends on what moved. If a few blocks have pushed out but the base is still sound, we can often take those courses down, fix the drainage behind them and rebuild. If the base has failed, the wall is leaning at the bottom or courses have slipped out of line for more than a section, rebuilding on a properly compacted base is the honest answer. We walk the wall with you and say which one it is before pricing anything.
How tall can a wall be before it needs reinforcement?
Most garden walls under about 3 feet stand on a compacted base and their own weight, which is why they are called gravity walls. Once a wall gets taller, or the slope behind it is steep, geogrid reinforcement gets layered into the backfill to tie the wall into the soil mass. We build walls across Brooklyn yards of every height, and we tell you up front what yours actually needs rather than upselling reinforcement it does not.
What kills a retaining wall in New York winters?
Water. When saturated soil freezes behind a wall it pushes outward, and that pressure is what bows and tips walls every spring in the five boroughs. The fix is built in, not patched on: drainage aggregate directly behind the block, weep holes to let water out, and courses set plumb so the load stacks straight. A wall that drains stays a wall. A wall that traps water becomes next year's repair job.
Decide what goes on top of the wall
Before we quote, think about what sits on or behind the finished wall. A seat wall for patio seating, a fence line, plantings or a raised garden bed all change the height, the footing and sometimes the block you need. Telling us during the site walkthrough means the wall gets built for its final job the first time, not rebuilt after the fact.
Answers before you book
What determines the cost of a paver driveway or patio job?
Square footage, the amount of excavation needed, access to the site, and the material you pick all move the number. A Brooklyn driveway with tight side-yard access and old concrete to haul away costs more than an open, clear yard. Every estimate is priced after a site walkthrough, so you get a real number, not a guess.
How is an estimate put together?
We walk the property with you, measure the area, check drainage and access, and talk through material options. Then we price the excavation, the compacted aggregate base, the pavers or stone, and the cleanup as one clear quote. Estimates are free, and there is no obligation attached.
What areas does Apple Masonry serve?
The crew is based in Brooklyn, NY and works across the five boroughs, including Queens, the Bronx, Manhattan and Staten Island. We also take jobs in Jersey City, Hoboken, Bayonne, Elizabeth, Newark, Linden and West New York. If you are close to one of those, call (347) 836-3855 and ask.
How do I arrange a site visit?
Call (347) 836-3855 or request a walkthrough through the site. We will set a time to come out, look at the work in person, and go over options with you on the spot. Most visits take under an hour, and you get a written estimate afterward.
How soon can work be scheduled?
It depends on the season and the size of the job. Smaller repairs and fence installs often get slotted in faster than a full driveway build, which needs consecutive dry days. During the walkthrough we will give you a realistic start date and keep to it.
What should I do to prepare for the job?
Move vehicles off the driveway and clear the work area of furniture, planters and hoses. Let neighbors on tight Brooklyn blocks know about equipment if access runs through a shared space. We handle the rest, including protecting planting beds and hauling away debris.
What happens on the first day of a paver installation?
The crew stakes out the layout, excavates to the right depth, and starts building the compacted aggregate base. Equipment is staged, edges are set, and by the end of day one you can see the exact footprint of the finished surface. We check in with you before any surprises get decided for you.
Do you clean up the site when the job is done?
Every job ends with a full cleanup. Debris gets hauled, paver dust gets swept, polymeric sand joints get their final pass, and lawns get raked where equipment crossed. Customers regularly mention the tidy site in reviews, and we plan on keeping it that way.
Can you repair an existing paver surface instead of replacing it?
Often, yes. Sunken or rocking pavers usually point to base or bedding sand problems underneath, and we can pull the affected stones, rebuild that section, and reset them to match. If the whole base failed, we will tell you that straight and price a proper rebuild.
What are your hours for scheduling and questions?
We answer calls Monday through Friday from 6:00 AM to 11:30 PM, and Saturday from 6:00 AM to 7:30 PM. Sundays we are closed. Early morning calls work well if you want to schedule a Brooklyn area walkthrough before your own workday starts.
